I can’t even express in words how grateful I am to the people of Kansas and the nation for your amazing generosity and support. Over $355,000 has been donated to the COTA for Kyle campaign. I’m sorry to report to you that this battle seems to have become even more uphill.
As you already know, the insurance companies denied payment for the bone marrow transplant that Kyle needs. When we learned this last year, we increased our fundraising goal to $500,000. We believed that it would be enough money to get treatment started, given the hospital’s early and rough estimate of the cost of the procedure. We were so close to that goal and beginning to think that this would actually happen when we learned that the cost estimate had risen. A down payment of 80% is required to begin the procedure, and that down payment figure currently stands at $880,000. We aren’t sure of the reason for the increase. We think it is probably increasing because more kids have been treated now and they’re getting a more accurate picture complications and of what it costs. The economy probably hasn’t helped.
We are heartbroken and upset. However, when you live what we live, you learn that the only way to get by is to take it one day at a time. That is what we are doing, and that is what we will continue to do no matter what the setback. We are hoping the insurance companies will reconsider now that more children have been treated. The doctor has written a paper for publication, hopefully sometime soon. We hope that will help with the insurance companies as well.
We have decided to not actively pursue fundraising until the insurance companies reconsider Kyle’s case. At that time, we will have more information to determine financial need. We are NOT giving up on his fight for life and would appreciate your continued prayers while we await insurance possibilities.
The funds donated to the COTA for Kyle campaign will remain available to him for transplant-related expenses until his death. If for some reason Kyle is unable to use those funds himself, they will eventually be shared with other children needing life saving transplants. We hope and pray Kyle will get his transplant.
Thank you for caring for Kyle and sharing your time, energy, and financial contributions. I hope to have better news to tell you soon.
